A Message From Debi-The Mojo Coach

Happy New Year! Hope your holiday was filled with fun, family, friends, good times and special memories. I also hope that if you’ve fallen off track with your healthy lifestyle changes, you realize that it’s perfectly normal to fall off track…as long as you get back on.

There’s no room for “all or nothing” thinking when it comes to creating lasting change. We all slip and fall. The idea is to contain the slip so the damage is minimal, figure out what and why it happened, come up with a new strategy and get right back on track. It’s also a matter of redefining “perfect.” What does perfect mean to you? Is there any room for error? If not, you’re certainly setting yourself up for some disappointment. Why? Because you’re human! There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes. In fact, that’s often how we learn our most important lessons. The only mistake is believing that you can’t do something because of previous failures. Instead of letting them derail you, use them as a stepping stone to make you stronger, wiser and better! After all, isn’t that what you’d tell your kids?!

It’s time to create some new habits that bring you closer to becoming the mom you want to be. Do you want to:

  • Lose weight, eat healthier, learn how to preplan healthy meals/snacks for you and your family?
  • Determine your specific “fitness personality” so you can design a fitness program guaranteed to work for you?
  • Prevent the dangers of chronic, unmanaged stress by understanding what your specific stress does to your body? (you’ll be shocked!)
  • Limit your time with negative, draining, toxic people while increasing your time with those who support, nourish and accept you for who you are?
  • Banish your negative self talk, improve your confidence and self esteem?
  • Discover more joy, passion and purpose right now?

You can make any changes you want…with a plan, some information and inspiration. Let me help you on your journey by visiting www.TheMojoCoach.com. Read some articles, get some support from the message boards, get started with one of my products or a coaching package and make the commitment to take care of you! Here’s to a fresh start to your best year yet!

Ideas, Tips, Information and Inspiration From...

Do you know about “Twitter?” It’s a networking site where you sign up and have brief “chats” with like minded professionals or people with similar interests. I’ve met so many health/fitness/wellness moms and others who share a similar passion to mine. (By the way, if you “tweet,” be sure to follow me at http://twitter.com/themojocoach and say hi!) One of the people I met was Matt Cardwell, aka “The Fitness Nerd.” He had so many “mom friendly” healthy eating tips so I asked him to share a few so you can enjoy them as well (always looking out for my moms!) He sent me so much information; I can’t fit it all in this issue so you can enjoy some of his time, money and aggravation sparing ideas over the next few issues. Here are just a few of his tips:

A Few Things Every Healthy Kitchen Should Have

By The Fitness Nerd (aka Matt Cardwell)
www.answerfitness.com

You’ve all heard it before: Getting or staying in shape has a lot to do with what you eat.

And eating healthy usually means venturing into the kitchen and actually cooking.

But between shuttling the kids to soccer or ballet, lending a hand with homework, squeezing in some time for yourself at the gym and maybe even juggling the demands of a career, preparing fast, healthy homemade meals can be a challenge for the modern mom.

The good news is that if you keep these five things around your kitchen, you can shave hours off your prep time and help yourself and your family eat healthier every day of the week.

And even better, you’ll save some money, since homemade food is generally more economical than fast food or prepackaged foods from the grocery.

Here are things every busy mom (and anyone who wants to improve their diet) should have in their kitchen: (other items every kitchen needs in upcoming issue-stay tuned!)

Item #1: A Salad Spinner.

While pre-packaged salad greens are convenient, they aren’t particularly economical.

For the price of a two bags of pre-packaged romaine lettuce, you could buy four times as much romaine directly from the produce counter and have pre-washed greens ready in an instant for dinner or lunch salads.

Salad spinners allow you rinse and dry lettuce quickly at home and then “bag-it” yourself. The entire process takes about ten minutes and will give you enough healthy greens for salads all week long. Even better, get the kids involved: they’ll love helping you spin the salad.

Bonus Tip: Make sure the greens have been spun several times and drained before bagging. Excess water is what makes lettuce get brown or slimy during storage. Once spun, bag the lettuce in gallon sized Ziplock bags. Store the bagged greens in the produce drawer/crisper portion of your refrigerator for up to five days. Salad on demand!

Item #2: A Subscription to a Healthy Cooking Magazine

Variety is the spice of life, and the key to consistently eating healthy (and well.)
One of the reasons people struggle to consistently eat healthy is that they think healthy eating is all about brown rice, salad, steamed broccoli and chicken breast.

Most recipes that you love can be made healthy with some simple changes to the ingredients. Luckily, magazines have paid staff whose job it is to figure out ways to make healthy versions of your favorite traditional dishes.

Consider subscribe to a magazine like Cooking Light or Clean Eating Magazine.

Even if you only get 1-2 recipes a year from these magazines that you or your family love, it will be worth the $20 yearly subscription.

If you aren’t particularly skilled in the kitchen, both of these magazines also have regular features to help you learn the basics of cooking, and they also have regular “time-saver” recipes that can be prepared in under 20 minutes – a real plus for busy moms.

Why not just buy some healthy cookbooks?

There are two main advantages to magazines that arrive each month:

First, you’re more likely to open and actually cook from a magazine that arrives each month. Cookbooks tend to gather dust, and you only go to them when you are looking for a recipe. Magazines can inspire you to try new things, because they are rich with photos and prep advice.

Second, magazines are designed to feature seasonal foods. So in December, they’ll have recipes for healthy holiday cooking and in the spring, they’ll feature foods that take advantage of produce that’s available in season. This makes the recipes more relevant to you … and you’ll be more likely to try them out.
